Will Gen AI take our jobs?

As a small business owner I’m afraid the answer is probably no. Sorry.

If you work in a large corporate organisation or supply a large corporate organisation with services like research, content creation, or coding. Then honestly it is more likely. But if you are an employee or a supplier than uses AI then you are probably still going to get work for now.

Right now corporations are very quick to say that AI will not replace staff. It will “augment staff” make them “super productive” and allow them to “focus on more important tasks”. Nice idea, but in reality some people are pretty adept at a robot replaceable task because its what they know. Just assuming they could turn their hand to something more cerebral may be a little optimistic.

Also AI costs money. Successful corporations only spend money if it equates to something in return. That return either equals growth, risk reduction or greater reduction in cost in another budget category. Like staff or services costs. This is not harsh. It is capitalist economics.

The first cuts will likely be made in supplier services, which will look ok for the companies profile and great to the investors, but have knock-on effects down the supply chain.

Of course the ultimate aim for a small business owner in many cases would be to replace themselves entirely with AI, and still collect the income. Wrangling your robot slaves via a mobile phone, whilst you sip rum punch on a tropical beach and have a robot foot rub. Unfortunately right now for the majority of multitasking small business owners who interact regularly with the physical world, this is a little way out of reach. Best we can do is save you a few hours!
